Grow Local OC is an Orange County, CA-focused local food and agriculture program designed to build awareness around the benefits of embracing a community food system wherein food production, processing, distribution and consumption are integrated to enhance environmental, social, economic and nutritional health.
The program seeks to engage and activate community stakeholders through awareness building events including farm-to-table dinners, community gatherings, maker fairs and a capstone Community Food Systems Conference, which will take place on November 10, 2016 at Cal State Fullerton University (CSFU) and address the following:
- Defining and establishing a roadmap for Orange County’s future food heritage
- The local food marketplace opportunity in OC; what it looks like today and what it’s potential is for tomorrow; assessment of challenges; a look at what’s worked in other cities
- Solutions to tackle food poverty and increase the supply of local, healthy food to those that need it most
- Launching a local food-focused business venture – from growing to making
- Innovative urban farming solutions and business models – for profit and nonprofit – that empower community and economic development
- The health benefits of a robust local food system
The Grow Local OC program is made possible by a partnership between Seedstock and the OC Food Access Coalition.
Seedstock is a social venture that fosters the development of robust and sustainable local food systems through consulting services and the use of a variety of tools, including the news and information blog Seedstock (www.Seedstock.com) and live events. Seedstock works with government agencies, municipalities and all private sector stakeholders to create a sustainable food ecosystem of innovation, entrepreneurship and investment.
About OC Food Access Coalition
At OC Food Access (www.OCfoodaccess.org), we are developing innovative, community-based strategies to end hunger and deliver nutrition – not just calories – to the underserved in our community.
The Coalition was founded in 2010 in response to a call for county-wide coordinated action among hunger, health and food systems stakeholders. Together we work to define the gaps in services and resources that prevent healthy food access, and ultimately help define and implement sustainable solutions to hunger.
